This lovely man never had kids of his own. But he became grampy. Emma, was the apple of his eye! He just fell in love with her, though he didn’t admit it, because he loved all the grandkids, and did not want to show favoritism, of course, His grandsons and his nieces and nephews were also very loved! We wished we had more time with all of them. But life catches people up. But this little girl caught his heart. They had bonded, I love that they did.
Emma and Ollie have penned Grampy and me down in bed all night long when they come. As they grew the bed got rather crowded. If I moved Oliver would squeeze my arm even higher like I might go somewhere! Grampy became a pillow or held down by a leg or two.
So close was this early bond that Emma woke up crying when she was very young maybe three or four and insisted Mom call and check him out! She wanted to see grampy right now! I got a call slightly frantic but controlled call from Mom asking if he was ok! I think they were in Massachusetts then.
As for me, I took care of them when Mom was in nursing school and sang them to sleep each night. The same songs over and over. Each had their own favorites. Emma can still be put to sleep by my singing Down In The Valley! Let’s see___Down in the valley, the top one as it was the first when Em was 2 I think. Pretty Red Wing, Scarlet Ribbons,
I peeked in to say goodnight
And then I heard my child in prayer
Send for me some scarlet ribbons
Scarlet ribbons for my hair.
All the stores were locked and shuttered
All the streets were dark and bare
In our town no scarlet ribbons
No scarlet ribbons for her hair.
Through the night my heart was aching
Just before the dawn was breaking.
I peeked in and on her bed
In gay profusion laying there
Scarlet ribbons, scarlet ribbons
Pretty scarlet ribbons for her hair.
If I live to be a hundred
I will never know from where
Came those lovely scarlet ribbons
Scarlet ribbons for her hair…
You love them beautifully.
