The pretty Yellow Trout Flower, Pejj Nunes

A patch of bright yellow along side the road going out back.
Greets me yearly, in the spring.
Mottled green and turquoise leaves, spotted reddish brown.
Standing proudly there, an easy handful to be picked.
Thick, tapered on both ends; snugly fit against the ground.
Single, such a pretty head, as a bonnet bowing down.
Six curled petals bending back, they don’t quite touch____
The copper colored back. Hiding on the other side,
Three the round clubbed ovaries, reddish stamen in throat,
Found too on mountainsides or in conifer woods.
A marvel of dainty ladies, laughing in a gentle wind.
I must say there is no interest in eating them___
Even though I may!
